Three Day Road tells the tale of two young Cree men, Xavier and Elijah, who leave their lives in Moose Factory, Ontario, to go to war as snipers during the First World War. In the novel, brutal stories of war and survival are recounted by Xavier as him and his aunt, Niska, make their three day journey back to Moose Factory in a canoe.
Author Joseph Boyden drew his inspiration for the novel from Francis Pegahmegabow, a legendary aboriginal sniper who served during the Great War. Having a grandfather and uncle who also served, Boyden drew upon numerous family narratives supplement his book.
